PHYSICIAN NUTRITION SPECIALIST
Mary Ellen Renna, M.D. is a board certified pediatrician, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of a small, pioneering group of physicians nationwide who have been certified by the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialist. As a mother of three with more than 20 years of experience as a pediatrician, and her position as one of only a handful of pediatricians in the nation to be board certified in pediatrics and be a diplomat of the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, Dr. Renna is one of the leading authorities on issues surrounding children's nutrition and the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.
Dr. Renna is the author/creator of Growing Up Healthy the Next Generation Way : Add Years to Your Child's Life and Life to Your Child's Years (Select Books, New York 2007)- a revolutionary family based nutrition and fitness program for children. Her program has recently been awarded the National Parenting Center Seal of Approval and the CNE Seal of Excellence. Her second book, Medical Truths Revealed & Breaking the Misinformation Chain is a ground breaking book designed to give sound medical advice on the many topics reported on in the media.
Dr. Renna has participated in many television and radio interviews and has become a regular contributor to local and national newspapers, magazines, and websites in an attempt to teach parents and families specific strategies to develop life-long healthy habits in fitness and nutrition. Her appearance has helped to bring evidence backed medical advice to the public.
Dr. Renna has devoted her time and expertise in support of charitable organizations which benefit children. Recently she has participated in the Variety health and fitness festival for children living in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan and has appeared on The Variety's Children's Charity Annual Telethon. She also has teamed up with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Long Island to spread her message and raise money for MS. She has worked together with corporations such as Apple and Eve, a leading producer of 100% real fruit juices. They are working together to help families learn how to stay fit with the nationwide campaign "Families Fit Together." She is a featured contributor to the healthy tips section of the Apple and Eve website and has appeared on 2 million juice bottles promoting this program.
In 2007, Dr. Renna has been recognized by Long Island News as one of the TOP 50 MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN and honored by the Long Island Press for her significant, unique and lasting contributions top her community. She has received many prestigious awards and recognition throughout her career, including the prestigious PREP Education Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for years 1993-2003 The American Medical Association awarded her the Physicians Recognition Award from 1995 through 2007, and she also was the recipient of the Stony Brook Foundation Award for academic achievement and research.
Dr. Renna is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Resident Instructor at Schneider Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. Along with her membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Physicians Nutrition Specialist, she is also a member of the Nassau County Pediatric Society, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Association, and American Society for Parental and Eternal Nutrition, The Society for Clinical Pediatrics and Docs for Tots.
